Dental prosthetics: what options are there and what to choose?

If teeth are damaged or missing, modern dentistry offers different methods of their restoration. Let’s look at the main types of prosthetics so that you can understand which option is right for you.

Fixed prosthetics

If you need to restore one or more teeth, but want them to look and feel like real ones, your dentist may offer fixed structures:

  • Crowns – are relevant when a tooth is damaged, but its root is still intact. The crown is placed on the ground down tooth (or on an implant, if the tooth is to be removed), completely restoring its appearance and function.
  • Bridges – are installed if one or more teeth in a row are missing. Crowns are fixed to adjacent teeth, forming a single strong connection.
  • Veneers – thin ceramic overlays made of zirconium that help correct the color and shape of teeth, but are only suitable for minor damage.

Fixed prosthetics are convenient, since the structures are firmly fixed and do not require special care, except for regular oral hygiene.

Removable dentures

If many teeth are lost or one of the jaws is completely toothless, the dentist may offer removable dentures.

  • Complete dentures are used when there are no teeth at all. The dentures are fixed due to the anatomy of the jaw and special creams.
  • Partial dentures are suitable if several teeth in a row are missing. Such dentures are attached to your teeth using special hooks (clasps) or locks.
  • Clasp dentures are a more convenient option for partial dentures with a metal frame. They are securely fixed and cause less trauma to the gums.

Modern removable dentures are comfortable and aesthetic, but you need to get used to them, and also periodically adjust them at the dentist.

Prosthetics on implants

Implantation is one of the most reliable methods of dental restoration. First, a titanium root (implant) is installed in the jaw bone, and then a crown, bridge or even the entire row of teeth is fixed to it. The following advantages of prosthetics on implants can be highlighted:

  • Looks and feels like natural teeth.
  • With proper care, implants last for decades.
  • There is no need to grind down adjacent teeth, as when installing bridges.

How to choose the right option?

The choice of prosthetic method depends on the condition of your teeth, the number of missing teeth, your budget and your wishes. If the tooth is destroyed but the root is intact, a crown will do. If several teeth are missing, then a bridge or partial denture can be installed. If there are no teeth at all, consider implants or removable structures.

A dentist consultation will help you choose the best solution, taking into account your situation and wishes. The main thing is not to postpone dental restoration, because timely prosthetics helps maintain the health of the entire oral cavity, protect the remaining teeth from wear and tear and will simply bring comfort to everyday life!

Frequently Asked Questions

We have three options for crown material: metal-ceramic, ceramic, zirconium. The choice of crowns depends on your needs, the installation area (smile zone or chewing teeth) and budget.

If your denture was made in Poland, you should contact the dentist or dental laboratory where it was issued. Our dentist does not repair dentures. If the structure was made abroad, it is unlikely that a Polish dental laboratory will undertake its repair.
